Since the original publication of the international loudness measurement standard ITU-R BS.1770 in 2007 much work has been done to introduce a radically new way to measure and balance audio signals. The new paradigm is based on loudness normalisation, not peak normalization. What has not changed is the fact that sound engineers should and will use their ears to craft a satisfying mix, in line with artistic intent. Decades of peak metering have left their marks in the collective brain of the audio world, and so it is not surprising that there are several challenges involved, especially in the transition phase. After introducing the latest developments, those challenges will be examined and potential solutions will be offered.
